It’s Not an Easy Road — Walking With Jesus Through Every Trial

The Christian journey is often pictured as a peaceful stroll through sunny fields. But the Bible paints a more honest picture — the path to Heaven is narrow, sometimes steep, and often lined with trials (Matthew 7:14). The hymn It’s Not an Easy Road captures that truth beautifully, reminding us that while the way may be hard, we never walk it alone.

“It’s not an easy road we are traveling to Heaven,
For many are the thorns on the way…”

These opening words echo the reality of life in a fallen world. Jesus Himself warned His followers, “In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). Every disciple has faced discouragement, disappointment, and spiritual battles — but those very challenges prepare us for the Kingdom (Acts 14:22).

Yet the song doesn’t leave us in despair. “The Savior is with me; His presence gives me joy every day.” This is the heart of the gospel promise: Emmanuel — God with us (Matthew 1:23). We are never abandoned on the road. Whether we walk through the valley of the shadow of death or climb the highest mountain, His rod and staff comfort us (Psalm 23:4).

The chorus lifts the soul:
No… no… it’s not an easy road,
But Jesus walks beside us,
And brightens the journey,
And lightens every heavy load.

This is a reminder of Christ’s own invitation: “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28–30). His presence doesn’t remove every obstacle, but it transforms the way we experience them. Trials that might have crushed us become testimonies of His sustaining grace.

As Seventh-day Adventists, we look forward to the day when the road will end — not in defeat, but in victory. The last steps of the journey may be the hardest, but beyond them lies the joy of seeing our Savior face to face (1 Thessalonians 4:16–17; Revelation 21:4). Until then, we walk in faith, knowing that the One who began this journey with us will lead us safely home (Philippians 1:6).

So when the thorns prick, when the road winds steeply upward, and when the night feels long, remember: it may not be an easy road — but it is the road to Heaven, and Jesus walks it with you.
